2020 Chinese New Year

It's the year of the Rat and you are invited to the celebration

The Rat is the first in the 12-year cycle of the Chinese Zodiac.


It has characteristics of an animal with spirit, wit, alertness, delicacy, flexibility and vitality.


In Chinese culture, rats were seen as a sign of wealth and surplus. 

The Chinese New Year in 2020 starts on Saturday, January 25th and ends on February 11th, 2021.

This year we will be at the
Newcastle Art Gallery for our annual Chinese New Year 
Tai Chi and Qigong session 
10am - 11am

This is a FREE event no bookings required

and everyone is welcome

* Our Tai Chi and Qigong session will be held outdoors

   so please remember your water, hat and sunscreen.

* Food and drink are available for purchase, all other           elements free. 

To celebrate New Year in the traditional Chinese calendar, Newcastle Art Gallery invites you to a whole day celebration of food, culture and art.

Explore the exhibition BETWEEN TWO WORLDS

hear traditional music on the Dizi, Pipa, Guzheng, and Erhu presented by Meya Music Studio and watch traditional dances by the Marvellous Dance Group.

Join in the Tai Chi session with gold medallist in both open hand and weaponry, instructor Amanda Heidke from The Tai Chi Centre.

Try your hand at Chinese origami and water calligraphy.

Plus - enjoy a plate of moreish dumplings from Nans Dumpling Time or sip an iced tea from The Tea Collective in our pop-up outdoor eatery.
